Maleeva tops Garrison to reach European Indoors quarterfinals

ZURICH, Switzerland (Oct 5, 1995 - 17:48 EDT) -- Defending champion Magdalena Maleeva reached the quarterfinals of the $806,250 European Indoors tennis tournament Thursday, defeating Zina Garrison 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Maleeva, ranked seventh in the world, who had recently recovered from a bout of food poisoning, suffered two breaks of service in the second set before finally turning the match.

Fourth-seeded Anke Huber, fresh from her tournament win at Leipzig, was ousted by South African Mariaan De Swardt, ranked 125th, 4-6, 6-3, 4-6.

Chanda Rubin of the United States fared better in her second round match, dispatching Switzerland's Martina Hingis, ranked No. 17, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.

In other play Thursday Iva Majoli of Croatia, seeded seventh, beat Marianne Werdel-Witmeyer of the United States, 6-2, 6-4.
